Set around the 125-acre Brockwell Park, this leafy London village has traditionally flown under the property radar, despite its proximity to nearby hotspots such as Brixton, Camberwell and Dulwich. That’s all changing as savvy buyers and renters discover the charms of the neighbourhood – splashing around in Brockwell Lido, sampling the legendary fish and chips at Olley’s and browsing through the titles on offer at friendly Herne Hill Books. The area is recovering well from the disastrous burst water main flood of 2013, with a real sense of community spirit, while most shops and businesses have re-opened. An evergrowing selection of independent shops, restaurants, festivals and family-friendly activities makes this an area in high demand.

An independent, sporty area

 

Herne Hill was a mix of farms and woodland until the mid 18th century, and used to lie in the route of the River Effra. One suggested origin for the area’s name is ‘Heron Hill’- due to the high number of herons congregating at the river. Click here for more details...
